• How Often Should You Read To Your Child

Sitting down and reading to your child is one of the best ways to ensure a lifelong reader. Long before your child learns how to read, he can still benefit greatly from sitting down with a parent and listening to his favorite books. By listening to the words and looking at the text and pictures on the page, your child is increasing his vocabulary in preparation for talking and reading at a more advanced level. Your child is also following along as you point to words on the page, and he starts to associate the written word with specific meanings. In addition, reading together is an easy, effective way to bond. Children will love the time they get to spend with you and will love the stories that you read to them.

During a typical busy day, it can be hard to know how much reading time is sufficient, how much is too little and how much is ideal. The answer depends on your child’s personality and your usual schedule. When your child is a toddler, you should ideally read together at least once a day. Read for as long as your child seems interested and engaged or as long as your schedule allows.

If your child tends to grow restless, try shorter reading periods two or three times a day. Ten minutes is usually a good length for younger children. Whenever your toddler brings you her favorite book, if possible, you should sit down and read together. As your child grows older and starts to learn how to read, try to stick to a once-daily reading schedule. Eventually, your child may even beg you to read every day!

Older children should have longer attention spans, so you can read for longer periods of time. You can even keep reading to your child after she learns how to read, especially by focusing on books above her reading level. As long as you continue to challenge them, children will improve their reading ability.

By reading as often as possible, you are illustrating the importance and fun of reading and encouraging your child to take the time to become a strong, competent reader. Eventually, the children will take to reading on their own and you will no longer have to read to them. This does not mean an end to reading as a bonding activity. You can read different books at the same time; you can read the same book independently and discuss the story as you go. You can suggest new books to each other as well. Instilling your child with a love of reading can be a lifelong bond that you can both cherish.
So in summary, you should read to your child as often as they possible and for as long as it holds their attention. By demonstrating how important reading is to you and for success in life, your children will learn to respect and enjoy reading.

  • Asthma Rates Decrease Among Children Due to Reduced Number of Smokers

Comments Off on Asthma Rates Decrease Among Children Due to Reduced Number of Smokers
    May 1, 2020 /  Parents and Kids

Currently fewer Canadian children are being diagnosed with asthma, due to reduced number of smokers and consequently because of reduced exposure to second hand smoke, according to statistics.

In more than a decade rates of the chronic inflammatory disease dropped to substantially reduced levels among children aged two to seven.

“A variety of environmental factors, as for example reduced exposure to cigarette smoke contributed significantly to these statistics,” the study declares.

Canada’s national statistical agency (Statscan) showed that 9.8% of children aged two to seven were diagnosed with asthma in 2008-09, significantly lower than 13.2 % in 2000-01.
This drop occurred mainly because fewer Canadian children live in families where adults smoke, according to study.

About 6% of children aged 11 and under were regularly exposed to second hand smoke at their homes in 2008, if compared with 24% in 2000. As about teenagers 13% aged 15 and older smoked regularly in 2008, dropping from 19% in 2000.

In present a few parents smoke because there were no statistically proved differences in asthma rates between children in smoking and non-smoking families between 2006-07 and 2008-09.

“This data shows that adult smoking rates dropped significantly, thus parental smoking is not seen as the leading cause of asthma in young children,” declared the representative of Statscan.

This link between reduced smoking and fewer cases of asthma are not unique only for Canada. For example, after Scotland prohibited smoking in public places, serious cases of asthma fell among preschool and school-aged children.

For instance researches from western countries discovered that asthma rates among children rose steadily for several decades before decreasing.

Statscan declared that reduced disease rates might also be due to changes in the population structure, changes in diagnostic methods, decline in the predominance of respiratory allergies, advances in air quality and changes in hygiene practices.

As well as asthma, ear infections are related to exposure to second hand smoke.

Canadas national statistical agency found out that asthma predominance decreased in the Atlantic Provinces, Ontario and Quebec, but remained quite stable in the West. This survey also discovered that the number of children who had had an asthma attack in the past 12 months dropped to 36 % in 2008-09 from 53 % in 1994-95.

The give study is based on data presented by the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth, a long-term study that capture information from thousands of families. The survey has been led every two years since 1994-95.

One of the primary goals of parenting is keeping your child safe, healthy, and protected throughout their life and for the majority of parents this means watching over their kids like hawks until they reach their adult years. Even the most careful of parents, however, are unable to protect their children from everything and therefore it’s imperative that you ensure that as a parent that you are not only watching over your kids but also using all available resources to evaluate how they are doing physically, emotionally, and psychologically.

Development seems to mostly start with the physical early on and as a result and even though other elements of your child are developing during this period at the same time, it can be hard to gauge initially and so all a parent really has to assess is the physical. Working along with your physician and speaking about any issues that might come up can help you to figure out early on if any issues are arising. Generally these issues can be indicative of more severe underlying genetic defects so keeping an eye on the physical progression of your kids isn’t insignificant.

As your child starts to age and they begin to act more frequently with their friends you will be better able to gauge how they are commanding themselves in social situations. When comparing your child to his peers try not to over judge them just look for any notable differences and then talk about them with your doctor. Each child will develop at their own rate and just because your child has not reached a particular milestone, does not have to mean that they have a problem.

Emotional development is something that can also be challenging to estimate, however, it’s still important that if you see your child especially as they start to approach the teen years, is struggling with issues that you get them the counseling they need to push forward. Counseling can be helpful for those who are fighting to deal with the pressures and issues that they have on their plate.

And if you have worries about your child of a less serious nature then you may be best served to take the time and look up any issues that you happen to be dealing with your child about on the internet. There are many excellent medical resources along with parenting ones which can help you to find out quick information to help put your mind at ease. No child comes with a manual however some on-line research can really help you assess your child to discover if you need to cool down or if your child requires a trip to the pediatrician.

  • Key challenges faced on eradicating child labor in India and other developing regions

Comments Off on Key challenges faced on eradicating child labor in India and other developing regions
    April 24, 2020 /  Parents and Kids

All around the world, especially in the developing parts, there are widespread instances of children being used as an informal labor force across industrial sectors. According to surveys, countries like Sudan, Congo, Zimbabwe, Pakistan and Ethiopia have consistently ranked high on the child labor employment charts. But it is India, the largest democratic republic nation in the world that has the dubious distinction of being regarded as the worst of the lot.>

The actual numbers vary since there is no real consistency on the statistical data gathering process. From the official estimates to the numbers put forward by non-governmental organizations and unofficial guesstimates, the numbers fluctuate wildly, going from 10 million children being employed to the high numbers breaching the 100 million mark.

Certain types of industries and occupations have also traditionally lent themselves to employing children out of choice. Examples include: Fireworks industry, Jari work, artificial jewelry units, textile units, etc. Moreover, the entire small and medium scale industry framework has also been at the risk of employing child laborers. Apart from these, ship building yards, scavenging and informal recycling networks, food service industries, etc. too have found to be significantly involved in contributing to the employment of children.

In most instances, the murky world of child trafficking has spread its deadly tentacles by preying on the circumstances and compulsions of people that are already suffering from the scourge of severe poverty conditions. But, child labor in India is not simply a poverty problem. There are other factors involved that include societal attitudes towards children, family driven negligence, and a medieval mindset that believes in practices such as bonded labor and so on.

A close examination of the reasons behind these developments by experts has revealed that they do not really work on their own. In almost all the cases, close interdependencies have been discovered between the key reasons.

At the top of this list is poverty and this is often endemic, running through the fabric of the family or community on the whole. Lack of access to a quality education is another contributing factor, with school dropout rates being higher than the general average in regions where child labor is rampant. There are also high incidences of gender discrimination with girls being consistently worse off than boys in this regard. Natural or man-made disasters often leave children at a considerable disadvantage and expose them to the risk of exploitation.

On-the-whole however, it is society that is largely responsible for this scourge. The demand for cheap labor and the subsequent exploitation of kids are both, the result of societal conditions and it is therefore necessary for the thought process to change, before we see the effects in the actual world.

  • Why Divorce Is So Unfair for Children

Comments Off on Why Divorce Is So Unfair for Children
    April 21, 2020 /  Parents and Kids

Whatever the reason for a couple to divorce, the effects on children can be harmful.

Children love their parents equally and whatever the reasons for a husband and wife to want to end their marriage and go their separate ways, it can not be forgotten how this will impact and affect the children.

Children are hardly ever to blame for a marriage failing. And often they are the innocent victims who lives are completely changed because their parents have decided to split up.

If a marriage is ending because a one of the couple has been unfaithful, the children had no part in this and yet are expected to take sides and willingly accept that their parents will no longer be living together and that the family unit has broken up. Add to this the unimaginable thought of the children having to live with one parent and seeing the other parent on alternate weekends, and you can see how this would badly affect most children especially those who are very small and don’t understand what is going on around them.

Many parents fail to appreciate and understand that their children continue to be affected by this family breakup for many years to come.

Whilst the husband and wife have adapted to being separate, and possibly might have met other partners as time goes on, children still cling on to the hope that their parents might one day get back together again.

They don’t want to see a stranger in their father’s place or another woman with their father. These things can be disruptive especially for young minds and can cause resentment and loathing in children towards the parent who has wronged as well as to the new partners of both parents.

Studies also show that the effects of divorce on young children tend to lead to lower marks at school, mood swings and disruption in the lives of those children whose parents had divorced.

  • Tips To Decide On The Appropriate Childrens Clothes

Comments Off on Tips To Decide On The Appropriate Childrens Clothes
    April 18, 2020 /  Parents and Kids

Shopping for childrens clothes can be fun but at the same time time-consuming because of the availability of many types of options in the stores. The other fact is that children grow up very fast making it more difficult to find the most appropriate clothing for them. The following tips will act as a guideline to the parents and guardians when it comes to selecting various types of clothing for their kids.

Because the kids play a lot it is important that when selecting everyday clothes, the buyers should select clothes that can be easily worn. They should come with the right type of structure to make it easy to put on or remove as desired. The buyers should also ensure that they stay away from those clothes that stick to the body as this will make it hard to wear and at the same time limit the freedom of the child when they are playing.

The other important thing is to determine the comfort of the child. This means that the consumers should ensure that the type of fabric that makes the child very comfortable. There are various types of fabrics from lace to satin but not all of them are safe for the young ones and therefore the consumers are advised to opt for the soft cottons that are recommended for summer because of their comfort. They are also advised to select fleece or woolen for winter to keep the child not only comfortable but also warm. To ensure safety, it is recommended that the buyers opt for those that have zippers and not buttons when it comes to buying infants or toddlers clothes. Kids usually swallow the buttons and this has a lot of consequences. They are also asked to avoid the ones that are designed with ties as they increase the risks of strangling.

The size of the children clothing is also very important. Choosing larger clothes will increases the chances of the child tripping over them thus causing accidents. Selecting those that are smaller will only work to restrict the childs activities as well as interfere with their breathing- something that is not healthy. The advantage is that many stores have wide variety of clothing sizes for the kids and the buyers will have an easier time in choosing them. The other option is to go to the stores with the child and make him or her try as many clothes as possible in order to find the right one for them.

The increasing number of manufacturers and stores for children clothing has cause a wide range of prices for them. This provides many buyers a chance to select the ones that are within their budgets. The users have the option of selecting brick and mortar stores or online stores for all their shopping needs as they will get assorted clothes at different price tags. They can compare a variety order to find the ones that fit their budget

  • Child Support in New York

Comments Off on Child Support in New York
    April 17, 2020 /  Parents and Kids

Any couple that goes through a divorce has to deal with many issues, but those that have children usually go through even more acrimony when dealing with custody and support for their children. Child support is financial support provided by the noncustodial parent. Child support includes, cash payments (based on the parent’s income and the needs of the child), health insurance for the child, payments for child care, and payments for reasonable health care costs that are not covered by health insurance. Family Court determines the amount of child support the noncustodial parent will pay. Under New York State law, parents are responsible for supporting their child until the child is 21 years old.

There are guidelines in which the court uses to determine the amount of child support that is owed to the custodial parent, based on the noncustodial parent’s adjusted gross income and on the number of children involved. The court first determines the noncustodial parent’s gross income. The court then multiplies the adjusted gross income by the standard guideline percentage for the number of children. These percentages are as follows:
    17% for one child
    25% for two children
    29% for three children
    31% for four children
at least 35% for five or more children.
Then the noncustodial parent’s share of child care, medical, and educational expenses is added to the income percentage amount. The combined amount, percentage of income plus share of expenses, is the basic child support amount.

For incomes over $130,000, the court determines whether or not to use the percentage guidelines and may consider other factors in setting the full child support payment.

The main problem that many noncustodial parents have an issue with is that many fill out long and tedious expense forms and when it comes time to determine the monthly the courts do not take into consideration the expenses of the noncustodial parent. If you cannot pay your child support you can file a “petition for modification” with the court that issued the support order. Only the court can change what you owe. Just because you think you cannot pay, do not stop paying. Continue to pay what you can while you wait for the court to make a decision. You should know that the court will only change the amount of support you need to pay if there has been a substantial change in your ability to pay.

Dealing with child support and child custody it can be very emotional, remember that in the end you want what is best for your children.

Changing bad habits now could save your child’s life in the future.

Childhood obesity rates are higher than ever in the United States. Learning poor eating habits from their parents, today’s children are eating high-fat foods with minimal fruits and vegetables. They’re also spending less time outdoors and more time playing video games and watching movies – a combination that leads to weight issues at a much younger age.

On top of the self-esteem issues overweight youth face, a high saturated fat and cholesterol intake means that kids are at a higher risk of heart attack, stroke, and other health problems later in life. Though it may be frightening to parents to learn that their children are among the first generation estimated not to outlive their parents, these startling numbers can be changed with healthy diet and exercise choices. Changing kids’ habits starts with changing the habits of the people who taught them in the first place: their parents.

It’s important for parents to influence their children in a positive way by spending lots of time outdoors doing physical activities and eating a healthy diet rich in whole foods. Eat minimal desserts and make activities fun by spending time as a family. This teaches children a healthy respect for food and builds a strong family foundation. Teach children the dangers of smoking and high alcohol consumption, which also raises risk for heart disease and stroke later in life.

It’s important to begin making these changes as early as possible. New studies have shown that making lifestyle changes in high-risk children can actually reduce risk later in life – an exciting finding for families with a family history of heart disease or stroke who worry about their children contracting the disease later in life. • What You Need to Know About Child Panic Attacks

Comments Off on What You Need to Know About Child Panic Attacks
    April 11, 2020 /  Parents and Kids

For both the child and the parents, a child panic attack can be both serious and frightening. Some of the facts around a Child panic attack will be outlined in this brief article along with a decipher to some of the clues that can help parents assist their child during this frightening and confusing time. Panic and anxiety along with other emotional levels are experienced very differently for children than adults, so when dealing with this situation nothing is as important as education.

As a result of experiencing panic attacks many children and teenagers will develop fears of going places. They are afraid that they will be embarrassed in they suffer a panic attack while engaging in an activity. Child panic disorders have many different types.

    GAD – Generalized Anxiety Disorder

The patient who experiences excessive worry about a series of event is generally affected by an anxiety disorder known as GAD. The time has little to do with the amount of logical worry that is applied since the events can happen either in the past, present or future. Often past events, conversations, upcoming events, school, friends, family, functions or any other possibility are just some of the things children or teens may sometimes worry about. A child cannot control the amount of time spent worrying about such things if they experience GAD.

Relaxation techniques and therapy are the best known ways to treat GAD. A trained mental health physician is usually the best prepared to encounter such as disorder although generally children can be talked out of their worry and it can work wonders. Instead of discouraging words of worry children are taught to use positive self-talk and generate a dialogue with others to explore their feelings. A prescribed medication is generally not used for a child panic attack disorder.

    Separation Anxiety Disorder

When children are separated from loved ones or comfortable situation that they are used to then they may experience panic. Typically this applies to the younger children who are separated from their parents. Anxiety can result from the threat of separation from a caregiver and occurs in many cases when children are left with a babysitter on a parents evening out on the town.

A child will avoid activities that cause a separation from the caregiver and when they are gone the child will worry excessively. Recognition of these emotions and a good dose of reality are the normal therapies involved. They should be made aware that nothing wrong happens, etc. Coping skills to deal with the separation, often through role playing, are also taught to the children.
